A sock hop was the 1950s party spot to be. This 50s party craze was a dance held in school gymnasiums. These dances became known as sock hops because teens would take off there shoes to dance so they wouldn't scuff the floor. In later years, the term sock hop was used for informal school dances. Now the term refers to a 1950's party theme.

Teens would dance at these fifties parties dressed in the latest styles. Girls wore poodle skirts with tight fitted blouses while guys wore jeans and white shirts with rolled up sleeves. Some of the most popular 50's party dances were the peppermint, twist, mashed potato, the pony, and the swim.

The most important thing about a sock hop was the music. The hot 1950's party music was of course rock and roll. Elvis Presley was the king of rock and roll. Other popular 1950's singers include Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, and Johnny Ray. Record players were mainly used at these 50's parties, but some had live bands that would play music.

Another hangout in the 50s was the soda shop. Soda shops were popular because it was a place that teens could hang out, enjoy their music and eat ice cream. This popular hangout of the 50s is another fun way to decorate for all your 50s parties.
